Jewel in the Palace bercerita tentang kisah kehidupan seorang perempuan bernama Seo Jang Geum (Lee Yeong Ae), yang merupakan anak dari pengawal kerajaan. Jang Geum hidup seorang diri, sebab ayah ibunya sudah tiada. Sebelum meninggal, ibunya sempat berpesan kepadanya untuk kepala dayang dapur di kerajaan.
